Ponteland Golf Club was founded in 1927, when a group of enthusiastic local golfers came together with a vision to create a course that reflected both the charm of the Northumberland countryside and the spirit of community. The original layout was a modest 9-hole course, but its popularity quickly grew. By 1931, additional land had been secured and the course was extended to a full 18 holes, with the design shaped by Harry Fernie, son of 1883 Open Champion Willie Fernie. His influence helped establish the strategic and enjoyable layout that still defines Ponteland today.
The first clubhouse was a simple wooden structure, offering little more than the essentials for members who were happy to let the golf do the talking. In 1937, it was replaced by the brick-built clubhouse that still forms the heart of the club overlooking the 1st tee and 18th green, and serving as a welcoming hub for generations of golfers.
Over the decades, Ponteland has evolved while remaining true to its roots. The course has matured into a beautifully maintained parkland layout, stretching over 6,600 yards, with tree-lined fairways, natural water features and subtle greens that provide an enjoyable challenge for players of all abilities. Its reputation has grown steadily, hosting county and regional competitions and earning a place among the most respected clubs in the North East.
Beyond the fairways, Ponteland has always been defined by its people a friendly, inclusive membership and a proud tradition of camaraderie that extends from the clubhouse to the community. From early pioneers with hickory clubs to today’s modern golfers, every member has played a part in shaping the club’s story.
As Ponteland Golf Club approaches its Centenary in 2027, we look forward to celebrating 100 years of golfing excellence, friendship, and shared memories and to building on a legacy that will continue to thrive for the next hundred years.
