We are proud to be selected as Ponteland Captains’ Charity for the 21/22 season.
Sport Newcastle is a small local charity run by volunteers that share a passion for sport. We support local amateur sports clubs and young people to help them achieve their sporting dreams and to get more youngsters involved in sport.
Sport Newcastle have been in existence for over 50 years, famously buying Jonathan Edwards C.B.E. his first pair of running spikes well before he was famous. He is now a patron of the charity.
We raise funds, typically £25,000 p.a., to distribute grants to clubs and individuals through a detailed application process that is overseen by a committee with extensive knowledge of the local sports scene. We hold an annual Awards Dinner, attended by over 400+ guests, when we recognise the region’s ‘Rising Stars’ of sport and present trophies for the major sporting achievements of the previous year. Every two years we hold an ‘Unsung Heroes’ event to recognise some of those hard working individuals behind the scenes of almost every local sports club.
The Dinner and our annual Golf Day, held this year at Ponteland G.C. (and already booked for 2022) are our major fund raisers. We also have a few regular generous benefactors and two local businesses that sponsor our main events. However, the last 18 months has seen our fund raising Dinner cancelled and subsequent income reduced.
We’re sure the support and energy of Chris and Avril along with Ponteland members will provide a real boost to our funding efforts over the coming year. We are delighted to have been chosen as the club’s charity of choice and will keep you informed throughout the year on where your money is going and the difference it is making to the lives of young people in the region.
